Frequently Asked Questions
About the CPE Year Long Residency Program
How many units does a year long residency provide?
Three Units of ACPE-CPE.
Can I be considered for the Residency with no prior units of CPE?
Yes, but applicants with at least one prior unit will be given preference in the admissions process.
Do I need to be ordained to be considered for CPE?
Ordination is not required. Since Clinical Pastoral Education is post graduate study, successful applicants will have completed a Bachelor's degree at a minimum. A Master's Degree in Theology, Pastoral Ministry or Divinity is preferred. Documentation will be asked in the form of a copy of your diploma to be included in your ACPE application. Additionally, we look for applicants who are active and rooted in their faith tradition and who have been in service in some way in their local faith community.
What can I do after I completed a year long residency?
If you end the residency year with four or more units of CPE, this is one of the components for certification. Certification depends on your credentials, both educationally and with your faith group. Please go to professionalchaplains.org and click on Membership, then on Board Certified Chaplain.
Is an on-site interview required for a CPE Residency?
Yes. Our experience is that it serves the candidate and the center best, when an on-site interview is conducted. The candidate will have an opportunity to talk with current residents and have a tour of the facility so that they can make an informed decision.
Do you accept international applicants in the Residency Program?
We will accept international applications from persons who have resided in the U.S. for at least one year prior to the application, who have a valid U.S. Visa, and who have completed at least a single unit of ACPE CPE.
What is the salary and benefits?
The salary is set annually by Human Resources. For 2012-2013, the salary is $27,200. As employees the CPE Residents are able to purchase a variety of benefits at employee pricing. Tuition is $350.00 per unit for any CPE program. Payment plans may be arranged by speaking to the student’s supervisor.
Do you provide housing?
PHS does not provide housing for employees. Apartments and rental properties can be accessed on the internet and by clicking onto www.ABQJournal.com.
How many positions are in the CPE Residency program?
Six.
What do you look for in a resident?
Our center looks for residents who have strong customer service skills and focus, who are self-reflective, self-motivated, and who have a passion for learning about themselves in ministry. We also look for diversity and for persons who can demonstrate flexibility with regard to the staffing schedule and responding to multiple demands.
