Our Charitable Purpose

Presbyterian was founded with a charitable purpose, and it remains as a central part of who we are today. In our early years, it meant keeping the hospital doors open during the Great Depression to help the most vulnerable. Today, that commitment lives on through a policy to provide medically-necessary services regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

  • In 2008, Presbyterian gave $24.9 million in free medical care to patients who could not afford it.
  • We provided an additional $52 million in care where the payment we received was less than the cost of the care we provided.

But more than the medical care patients rely on, the people at Presbyterian are proud to give their time and resources to the communities we serve, because we live here, too. Highlights of our 2008 contributions include:

  • $1.47 million to United Way of Central New Mexico, the bulk of which came from our generous employees.
  • $80,000 to Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless
  • More than 6,000 employee volunteer hours donated throughout New Mexico
  • $60,000 to provide more than 5,000 free flu shots in the community

We also like to say that our charitable purpose is part of everything Presbyterian does.  When we recruit and retain needed physicians for New Mexico… when we sustain critical behavioral health services at a financial loss… when we save taxpayers money by managing Medicaid services efficiently… all of these and more benefit the communities we serve.
