Inspired by the purpose to improve the health of the patients, members and communities served, the Presbyterian Health Plan Board of Directors is comprised of a diverse group of volunteer community members who are focused on improving health, improving the experience of care, and improving the affordability of healthcare.
The Presbyterian Health Plan Board of Directors is charged with the oversight of a statewide health maintenance organization and a health insurance company. The Presbyterian Health Plan provides health care financing through products and services designed and delivered to prevent illness and coordinate care for over 400,000 members throughout New Mexico. |
Dennis Batey, MD Dr. Dennis Batey joined Presbyterian Health Plan as President in November 2007.
Dr. Batey has a distinguished record of service in leadership roles in health care, most recently as Chief Medical Officer for Fallon Community Health Plan (FCHP) in Worcester, Massachusetts. Prior to his role at FCHP, Dr. Batey was the President of the Preferred Health Network of Maryland. From 1989 to 1997 Dr. Batey held several positions with FHP International, including Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Utah and New Mexico operations. In addition to his years of experience as a physician executive, Dr. Batey practiced medicine in Alaska with the United States Public Health Service and in private practice. |
| James Carabajal James Carabajal currently works as the Executive Director and Director of Finance for New Mexico Orthopaedics. He previously worked for New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants as an accounting manager and for Philips Semiconductors as a senior analyst.
Mr. Carabajal received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of New Mexico concentrating in accounting and finance. He also received a Diaconal Theology degree from the University of Notre Dame. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the New Mexico State Society of CPAs, the Hispanic Society of CPAs, the Medical Group Management Association, and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. |
| Steve Chreist - No Photo Available Steve Chreist joined the Presbyterian Health Plan Board shortly after his retirement as the head of the Albuquerque office of Mercer Human Resource Consulting. For thirty-five years, he consulted on benefit design and financing for many of the largest employers in New Mexico and the southwest. He has served in many volunteer positions in the community including United Way, All Faiths Receiving Home, Leadership New Mexico, and the Rotary Club of Albuquerque. In addition, he serves on the boards of Delta Dental of New Mexico and Renaissance Health Services Corporation of Michigan. A graduate of the University of New Mexico (UNM) Anderson School of Business, he is currently serving as President of the UNM Alumni Association. |
| Larry Clevenger, MD Dr. Larry Clevenger earned his Bachelor’s degree and Medical degree from The University of New Mexico (UNM), as well as his Master’s degree of Public Health from the University of Michigan.
He is a member of the UNM Main Campus Institutional Review Board and also serves on the Board of Directors Biomedical Research Institute of New Mexico. He served as Director of Health Benefits and Employee Services at Sandia Laboratories until his retirement. |
| Cathy Eddy As president of the Heath Plan Alliance, Cathy Eddy has been working with provider-sponsored and independent health plans throughout the country since 1996 with a focus on networking, education, governance, benchmarking and collaborative purchasing. She joined the Presbyterian Health Plan Board in 2005 and chairs the Board Quality Committee and serves on the Governance Committee. She is also a member of the Advisory Council for Women Business Leaders in the healthcare industry.
She received her Master’s of Business Administration in healthcare management and insurance in 1992 from The Wharton School and has spent much of her health care career in managed care, public policy, community health improvement, innovation and communication leadership roles. She also has a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Kent State University. |
| James H. “Jim” Hinton Jim Hinton has been with Presbyterian since 1983. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Economics from the University of New Mexico and his Master in Health Care Administration from Arizona State University. He served as Chief Operating Officer of PHS from 1992 to 1995 when he became President and Chief Executive Officer.
Mr. Hinton was recognized by The Healthcare Forum in 1993 as one of our emerging leaders nationally. He is past chair of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and served as co-chair of the New Mexico Healthcare Coverage and Access Task Force, a position appointed by the Governor. Mr. Hinton is a member of the Presbyterian Healthcare Services Board of Directors and serves as Chair of the Presbyterian Health Plan Board. |
George Isham, MD, MS Dr. Isham is Senior Advisor to HealthPartners responsible for working with the board of directors and the senior management team on health and quality of care improvement for patients, members and the community. Dr. Isham is also Senior Policy Fellow, HealthPartners Research Foundation, and facilitates forward progress at the intersection of population health research and public policy. He is active nationally and currently co-chairs the National Quality Forum convened Measurement Application Partnership, chairs the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s (NCQA) Clinical Program Committee and is a member of NCQA’s committee on performance measurement. Dr. Isham is chair of the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Roundtable on Health Literacy and has chaired three studies in addition to serving on a number of IOM studies related to health and quality of care. In 2003, he was appointed as a lifetime National Associate of the National Academies of Science in recognition of his contributions to the work of the IOM. He is a former member of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Task Force on Community Preventive Services and the Agency for Health Care Quality’s United States Preventive Services Task Force and currently serves on the advisory committee to the director of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Isham received his bachelor's degree in Zoology, master's degree in Preventive Medicine/Administrative Medicine from the University of Wisconsin Madison and his medicine degree from the University of Illinois. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin. His practice experience as a general internist was with the United States Navy, at the Freeport Clinic in Freeport, Illinois, and as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin. |
Steven Jenkusky, MD Dr. Steven Jenkusky is the Medical Director for the Behavioral Health Service Line at Presbyterian Healthcare Services and Chief of Psychiatry for Presbyterian Medical Group. He served as president of the Psychiatric Medical Association of New Mexico and is a physician board member for the New Mexico Medical Board. Dr. Jenkusky is a member of the Psychiatric Medical Association of New Mexico, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the New Mexico Medical Society. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from St. Francis College, his Master’s in Zoology from Southern Illinois University, and his Medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. |
| Charles Karaian, MD Dr. Charles Karaian has been a member of the Presbyterian Hospital staff since 1982. He is the Medical Director of the Presbyterian Heart Service Line as well as the Director of the Heart Failure Clinic. Dr. Karaian graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed his cardiology fellowship at the University of Colorado. Dr. Karaian's practice philosophy is "The patient is at the center of my world. I treat my patients as I would want to be treated – with utmost competence and compassion."

| Leslie Margolin Leslie Margolin has extensive experience with health plans. Most recently, she served as President and General Manager of Anthem Blue Cross in California. Prior to that, she led Kaiser Permanente’s hospital and health plan operations nationally. She has held leadership roles in a variety of organizations and community service groups. She is the current chair of the Board of Directors for the March of Dimes and former chair for the Ambassador Council of AIDS Project Los Angeles, where she currently serves as a board member. She served as secretary-treasurer for the Board of Directors of the California Association of Health Plans and as a member of the California Chamber of Commerce Board. Ms. Margolin also serves on the Board of Directors for the Los Angeles Urban League.
She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Government from Connecticut College, her Juris Doctorate from Hofstra University, and a Master of Law in Labor Relations from New York University. |
| Larry Stroup Larry Stroup is President and Owner of The Stroup Company, a real estate development company and a Principle of Primrose Pointe Real Estate LLC, both based in Albuquerque. He served on the Presbyterian Healthcare Services Board from 1987-2011 and held the position of chair from 1993-2011.
Mr. Stroup is past president of the Albuquerque Homebuilders Association and past Executive Committee member for the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois |
