Presbyterian Healthcare Services
Presbyterian is New Mexico's only private, nonprofit statewide healthcare system. With a single purpose of improving the health of individuals, families and communities, Presbyterian serves more than 650,000 customers throughout New Mexico. Governed by an independent volunteer board of directors, Presbyterian offers a broad range of healthcare services, including the state's leading health plan, comprehensive hospital services, primary care and specialty care from more than 27 clinics in eight New Mexico communities.
Founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1908, Presbyterian was first known as the Southwestern Presbyterian Sanatorium, a five-room cottage that served tuberculosis patients from across the United States. The Reverend Hugh Cooper left his ministry with the Presbyterian Church to develop and operate "The San" because so many of his parishioners were afflicted with the disease.
That original five-room cottage has grown to a 453-bed hospital today, Presbyterian Hospital, serving more New Mexicans than any other hospital in the state. And Presbyterian Hospital is just one part of a statewide system of care. Presbyterian Healthcare Services operates seven hospitals in Albuquerque, Clovis, Española, Ruidoso, Socorro and Tucumcari.
In addition, Presbyterian offers New Mexicans a range of health insurance products through Presbyterian Health Plan and primary and specialty care through Presbyterian Medical Group at 29 different locations throughout New Mexico.
Presbyterian is New Mexico's:
- Only private, not-for-profit healthcare system and the largest provider of health care, meeting 40 percent of the state's overall healthcare needs
- Largest managed care organization, providing commercial health insurance to employers, employees, individuals, as well as Medicaid and Medicare to more than over 650,000 New Mexicans
- Fastest growing physician group, hiring more than 50 new physicians in 2002 and employing nearly 300 physicians and providers statewide Largest provider of birthing services, welcoming more than 5,500 new babies into the world every year at Presbyterian Hospital Second largest private employer, with more than 9,500 employees
Our Commitment To Our Communities
As a not-for-profit healthcare organization, Presbyterian has no shareholders and pays no dividends. Instead, we are owned by New Mexico communities, and the return on investment that we provide is improved health. Like many nonprofit, community-based hospitals, Presbyterian pays less in taxes than comparable for-profit hospitals or businesses. We work to balance the privilege of this tax benefit with the responsibility to improve the health of the entire community and do so through an active Community Benefit giving program that includes:
- Charity care for the uninsured and under-insured
- Unreimbursed cost of care from government programs
- No charge services and donations for under-served populations
- No charge services and donations for the broader community
In addition, Presbyterian provides in-kind goods and services, cash donations, and advertising sponsorships to nonprofit organizations that work to improve community health, improve the quality of business and education and advance economic development within urban and rural New Mexico. Presbyterian gives to organizations that reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.
- Donating more than $2.1 million over the past five years to the United Way and providing guidance to the organization through board membership; in 2002, Presbyterian's contributions ranked 12th among all hospital systems in the nation
- Partnering with Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless to assure that individuals without means receive basic health care
- Providing domestic violence counseling and support services through the Presbyterian Women's Resource Center for clients with insurance and for those unable to pay
- Supporting the Hispano Chamber of Commerce through sponsorships and active participation
- Collecting more than 190,000 pounds of food since 2000 to benefit Roadrunner Food Bank
- Actively supporting non-profit organizations who work within the community to improve the health of New Mexicans, such as the Juvenile Diabetes Association, Heart Association, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Rural Association for Mental Health, and others
Presbyterian employees actively support other nonprofits by donating time in fundraising activities and by serving as members on boards of professional and community organizations. More than 95% of Presbyterian's forty-two senior leaders serve on community boards throughout the state, and our Employee Goodwill Group in Albuquerque supports community improvement activities throughout the year.
