Preceptorship / Mentorship
Presbyterian recognizes the value of mentoring newly hired nurses and ensures that they are trained and competent before assigning them to work independently.
Upon hire, each new nurse is assigned an experienced nurse preceptor to guide them through the orientation process.
Preceptors receive specialized training to learn how to create customized learning opportunities for new staff.
The orientation period depends upon the needs of each individual and the unit they are working on.
While graduate nurses may receive 12 to 16 weeks of orientation, experienced nurses usually receive between 6 to 8 weeks depending upon their backgrounds.
Orientation on critical care units and specialty units such as surgical services, pediatrics or labor and delivery are typically longer than those on general medical / surgical units.
During orientation, new nurses work side-by-side with experienced preceptors who teach them current protocols and practice guidelines as well as validate the unique nursing skills required to deliver care on the unit.
Detailed checklists and orientation manuals explain procedures and practice.
Some programs also include web-based learning modules, videos and professional lectures to complement the orientation process.
At Presbyterian, we want our nurses to be prepared and feel comfortable before they work independently.
To make sure that the orientation process meets the needs of the new nurse, managers meet with their new hires and their preceptors regularly.
