Caring for Our Patients

At Presbyterian we constantly work to improve outcomes. Over the past few years we have developed a number of processes that have improved patient care, reduced mortality and harm, improved satisfaction and simplified the day to day work for nurses. The combined efforts of these improvements have enabled us to systematically reduce unexpected patient mortality.
We have been working on mortality reduction for several years. Our mortality index for 2006 was 0.71, a score that is approaching the best in the nation. This measure is a severity score used to predict mortality. A score that is less than 1.0 means fewer patients died than expected and is a reflection of improvements in clinical practice. Before we began these processes, our index was between 1.15 and 1.20.
