Heart Truth for Women

Heart disease and stroke are the number one and number three killers of women over age 25.
Research shows that, compared to a nonsmoker, a woman who smokes has a risk of dying from heart disease equal to the risk she would have if she weighed 90 pounds more than the nonsmoker.
One of every 29 women dies of breast cancer, but one of every 2.4 women dies of heart disease, stroke or other cardiovascular disease.
Nearly every 60 seconds, a woman will die of heart disease, stroke, or cardiovascular disease – that’s more than half a million women each year.
63% of women who died suddenly of heart disease had no previous symptoms of this disease.
African-American and Mexican-American women have greater heart disease and stroke risk factors than white women of comparable socioeconomic status.
One in five women in the U.S. has some form of cardiovascular disease.
Older women who have heart attacks are more likely than men to die from them within a few weeks. After the first heart attack, studies show that 38% of women die within a year compared to 25% of men.
