Presbyterian Sleep Disorder Center Earns National Accreditation

This accreditation is for five years and involved a great deal of hard work by the providers and staff at the Sleep Center. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine offers accreditation as a demonstration that a sleep center has met all standards set by the AASM such as employing skilled and qualified staff, creating a clean and comfortable environment, developing a quality assurance plan, and adhering to evidence-based practice parameters. An accredited sleep disorders program is a significant resource to the medical community and to the public. Accreditation by the AASM assures quality patient care through comprehensive clinical evaluation and treatment. The accreditation process was extremely comprehensive and included a site visit to our lab where a trained surveyor reviewed our policies, charts and interviewed staff and consulting physicians.

Office Consultations

The first step toward better sleep is an office consultation with one of our sleep specialists. We will ask about your symptoms, sleep history, medical history and other factors that may be contributing to your problems with sleep.

Sleep Study

A comprehensive sleep study, or polysomnogram, is the next step for many of our patients. Polysomnograms are usually performed in a sleep laboratory. The lab resembles a bedroom. Patients' sleeping patterns are monitored during sleep through the use of masks and other specialized equipment that can be connected to the body using a special adhesive. For many patients, a sleep study is essential for an accurate diagnosis of the sleep disorder and to determine the correct treatment.

Before Your Sleep Study

  • Schedule an office consultation with your sleep physician
  • Sleep Disorders Center staff will schedule a sleep study for you and inform you of your appointment time
  • Some patients may need to schedule a pre-sleep study visit to the Sleep Disorder Center for a mask fitting
  • If you are scheduled for a Sleep Consult, you can save time by printing and filling out a Sleep Questionnaire for New Patients (.pdf) to bring with you
  • The Sleep Disorders Center is located in the Presbyterian Kaseman facility. Six beds are available for testing

What Do I Bring to the Sleep Study?

We want you to be comfortable, so bring what you normally wear while you sleep or bring comfortable, loose fitting clothes, as well as pillows, pillowcases and any personal sleep items.

Can I Have a Visitor During the Study?

Children may have one parent present during the sleep study. Adults may not have visitors unless specified by the physician.

Treatment During a Sleep Study

Some patients may require treatment during the sleep study. A common treatment is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP. CPAP involves fitting a soft mask over the patient's nose and mouth. The mask is connected to a special air compressor that provides a steady flow of air to keep the airway open during sleep. The air pressure is adjusted to provide the best results for the patient.

Discharge and Follow Up

For many patients, the use of a CPAP machine is a prescription that provides the lifelong benefit of significantly better sleep. Please follow this prescription and any other specific medical orders given by your physician.

CPAP equipment may be obtained from a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) company. Please consult the yellow pages or your insurance company for DME companies in your area.

Regular follow-up appointments with your sleep physician are necessary to ensure that your treatment is producing the best results.

After your initial discharge and between follow-up appointments, please expect courtesy telephone calls from our staff. They will be happy to answer your questions and help ensure that your treatment is working correctly.

The Sleep Disorders Center also offers weekly classes on CPAP therapy, which can help you get the best results from your treatment.

Medical Staff

Our medical staff is supported by a team of nurses, medical assistants, sleep technologists, sleep technicians, respiratory therapists, and clerical staff who are dedicated to helping you sleep better.
