Volunteering at Presbyterian Healthcare Services
The Presbyterian Volunteer Services Program falls under the direction of the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation. Volunteer Services has more than 500 volunteers working at 11 sites.
Profits from the four gift shops managed by the program are returned to Presbyterian Hospital via the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation designated for patient care and other programs. In recent years, the average annual amount given by Volunteer Services has been $300,000.
Why they became volunteers and why you should too!
Betty started out 'easy' coming to Presbyterian every other week and before she knew it, she was here three times a week. For more than five years now she has crocheted baby blankets and caps.
"It's such a rewarding feeling when so many patients and families are so appreciative of what we do," she said.
When Manny retired, he couldn't wait to come back to Presbyterian and volunteer. People often want to give him tips for his services but he tells them his heart is so full after a day volunteering, there is nothing more he could possible take.
When they insist, he says,"Send me a blessing or better yet, give me a hug."
Laura is thrilled with how quickly relationships develop between the volunteers and patients and their families. Liz started volunteering to meet a requirement for a university class. Today, as the mother of an 18 month old son, she is still at it. Recently she was in line at the bank dressed in her Presbyterian Volunteer shirt and people started coming up to her to thank her for her service.
"My family says I am glowing when I come home from the hospital," she said.
Adrienne had the pleasant surprise of finding out that one her co-volunteers lives on the same street she does.
"It's such a small world," she said.
