“This is my purpose in life:” Mechem Frashier brings mobile testing home to Native communities

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mechem Frashier has led efforts to bring mobile COVID-9 testing to San Felipe and Zia pueblos, as well as provide drive-through testing in Albuquerque at Balloon Fiesta Park.

Frashier, director of practice operations for urgent care at Presbyterian Medical Group, told the Albuquerque Journal it took her back to her teenage goal to bring services to Native people after watching her grandmother die of cancer at her Navajo Nation home, with “very little access to home health care.”

“For me, when we went to our first (pueblo), it was almost like … coming full circle,” Frashier told the Albuquerque Journal. “I wanted to help Native communities have more access to health care, so it was very emotional. To actually be able to bring this to the pueblos and say, ‘We’re bringing the health care to you,’ it’s been very satisfying and very heart-warming. I feel like this is my purpose in life.”
