Donation Supports Presbyterian’s Pediatric Chronic Care Clinic

February 1, 2019Press Release

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Thanks to a generous $1.79 million gift, Presbyterian Healthcare Services will expand care for children with chronic illnesses and complex medical conditions in New Mexico.

The Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation received the gift from Linda Barr and her late husband, former Presbyterian President and CEO, Richard "Dick" Barr. The gift establishes an endowment to sustain Presbyterian's Pediatric Chronic Care Clinic, which coordinates care for children with chronic illnesses or complex medical conditions.

The endowment will provide additional staff as well as development and educational opportunities for existing staff, which will expand access to care and improve experiences for patients. In honor of this generous gift, the clinic will be named the Richard and Linda Barr Pediatric Chronic Care Clinic

"This generous gift from the Barr family will help Presbyterian meet the needs of our most vulnerable patients," said Dale Maxwell, president and CEO of Presbyterian. "This is the latest example of their incredible dedication and commitment to Presbyterian and to improving the health of all New Mexicans."

Dick, a Milwaukee native, came to Albuquerque in 1969 to work as Presbyterian Hospital's administrator and served as Presbyterian's president and CEO from 1981-1995. Dick made many contributions to Presbyterian and the community, including establishing Presbyterian Hospital's first neonatal intensive care unit in the 1980s. Today, the Barr family's gift builds upon this legacy of care by ensuring critical care remains available close to home for young patients in New Mexico.

Presbyterian's Pediatric Chronic Care Clinic was established by Stephanie Gehres, M.D., internal medicine and pediatric specialist, in 2014. Dr. Gehres and her multidisciplinary team care for patients with chronic conditions such as congenital heart defects, genetic syndromes and cerebral palsy from infancy through adulthood.
