Presbyterian Española Hospital Opens New Emergency Department

June 14, 2017

ESPAÑOLA, N.M. – Presbyterian Española Hospital (PEH) celebrated the grand opening of its new Emergency Department (ED) with hospital staff and community leaders on Wednesday, June 14.

Over the past five years, PEH's ED has experienced significant growth in patient visits with more than 27,000 visits in 2016. As a result, the decision was made to begin building a new ED, which added five more rooms and allowed space for all rooms to be private.

"We are grateful for the support of Rio Arriba County residents, who recognize the importance of quality healthcare close to home by supporting a hospital mill levy," said Brenda Romero, administrator, Presbyterian Española Hospital. "We partner with the Rio Arriba County Commission to prioritize healthcare needs and ensure that mill levy funds are used to benefit residents throughout the county. The new Emergency Department will help us respond to meet the community's needs."

The new ED has 18 private, emergency care rooms, including two critical care trauma rooms. It was designed by Dekker/Perich/Sabatini to promote efficiency, adaptability and privacy with a focus on improving patient experiences and outcomes. The ED will provide 24-hour emergency medical services, including digital radiology and medical imaging. It also includes a dedicated room for families experiencing a difficult time to gather. The square footage has also increased, from approximately 10,500 square feet to 25,000 square feet.

"Our dedicated Emergency Department staff strive to provide the best care possible to residents of Rio Arriba County," said Dr. Fernando Bayardo, physician and medical director for the Emergency Department and chief medical officer, Presbyterian Española Hospital. "This new space will enhance the great care we already provide and allow us to better respond to the growing demand for emergency care services. We hope to care for our first patient on June 19."
