Dr. Ethan Sims Named “Man of the Year” by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Release Date:

June 6, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Presbyterian Medical Group would like to congratulate Ethan Sims, M.D., for being named the 2012 Southwest Region Man of the Year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Dr. Sims is an emergency department physician at Presbyterian Hospital and has a personal connection with the competition through his uncle’s passing from lymphoma. This connection encouraged Sims to raise $23,779.39 for blood cancer research.

From March 9 to May 17, the New Mexico competitors cumulatively raised over $102,000 for LLS, in addition to increasing awareness of the organization's mission.

Annually, LLS’ Man & Woman of the Year campaign raises money for blood cancer research. In this nationwide competition, participants engage in a ten week fundraising effort. The titles are awarded to the men and women in each community who raise the most funds; the top local fundraisers in the country also win the national titles.

Competitors raise funds in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. The Boy & Girl of the Year for New Mexico are Adler Rickords and Erin Brennan.

Adler, 11, is a survivor of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Though he is still receiving maintenance treatments, he is currently playing baseball and basketball and aiming for a career as a nurse or marine biologist. Erin was diagnosed with leukemia at age 5 and endured several years of treatment. Now 12, she’s back in school and thriving.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. The LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services.
