Dermatology

Dermatology is a specialty that focuses on the treatment of skin, hair and nail problems. There are many conditions that can be diagnosed and treated by a dermatologist. These include acne, dermatitis (or inflammation of the skin), fungal infections, skin cancers, shingles and warts or other growths.

When should I consult a dermatologist?

Your primary care provider (PCP) can treat many basic dermatology conditions. They may also perform cryotherapy (freezing) and biopsy procedures. However, more serious skin conditions may need to be referred to a dermatologist. If you are interested in making an appointment with your PCP for a skin-related condition, you can call your clinic or message your care team through MyChart to determine if your condition can be seen by your primary care team. If it is recommended that you see a dermatologist, please check with your health plan to find a provider in your network.

Do dermatologists only treat cosmetic skin problems?

No - like many specialists, dermatologists treat a wide variety of conditions, including both cosmetic and medical problems. Dermatologists can prescribe cosmetic treatments to help improve your appearance, and also can provide medical and surgical treatments for conditions such as skin cancers, infections, painful rashes, and scars.
