Perinatology is a subspeciality of obstetrics that focuses on the care of both the mother and the unborn baby in high-risk pregnancies. Perinatologists are also called maternal-fetal specialists. Our perinatologist works with you and your healthcare team to provide pre-pregnancy consultations. They will help you understand and care for various problems that may happen during a high-risk pregnancy. They can provide pre-pregnancy testing, as well as care during your pregnancy, and as needed after delivery.

Conditions Treated

A few common conditions treated include:

  • Medical conditions that may cause complications in pregnancy, such as high blood pressure or diabetes
  • Genetic counseling and testing for inherited disorders such as cystic fibrosis and hemoglobinopathies (blood disorders), as well as other reproductive genetic services
  • Prenatal diagnosis of birth defects, such as heart defects, Down syndrome and spina bifida
  • Obstetrical complications, including multiple miscarriages or history of premature births
  • Complications during pregnancy and after birth, including growth abnormalities and pregnancies of twins or triplets

  • Nuchal translucency
  • Fetal anatomical ultrasound
  • Amniocentesis
  • Fetal echocardiogram
  • Fetal Doppler ultrasound
  • Ultrasound, 3D and 4D
  • Biophysical profile
  • Nonstress test
  • Transvaginal ultrasound
  • Cerclage
  • Genetic counseling and screening for inherited disorders such as cystic fibrosis, hemoglobinopathies
