About the New Mexico Healthcare Exchange

Part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (signed into law in 2010) was the establishment of healthcare exchanges (HIX). Exchanges determine which companies can provide government-subsidized health insurance. Individuals can then purchase government-subsidized health insurance from these approved companies.

The goal of the exchanges is to:

  • Increase the number of people covered by insurance
  • Ensure consumer protection
  • Encourage cost-effective operational practices

New Mexico’s Health Insurance Exchange

All health insurance exchanges must be established and certified by January 1, 2014. New Mexico is in the process of determining how to implement an exchange.
