Pre-Anesthesia and Surgical Screening
At Presbyterian Hospital, our goal is to provide you with safe and effective care throughout your surgical services experience. The purpose of your pre-anesthesia and surgical screening (PASS) visit is to ensure you are ready for your surgery. The PASS visit is a screening process designed to identify issues that could cause your surgery to be delayed or cancelled.
Pre-Anesthesia and Surgical Screening Presbyterian Hospital
During your visit to PASS, the nursing staff will perform a thorough patient assessment that may include blood testing, urinalysis, EKG (heart rhythm test), and chest x-ray. These tests need to be completed in advance of surgery so the results can be reviewed prior to your day of surgery. During your PASS visit, a registrar will also verify your insurance coverage and collect any required copayment. The PASS process may take 60 to 90 minutes. Additional time will be needed if you require a chest x-ray.
What to expect during your PASS visit:
Step 1: Please come to the PASS department and sign in.
Step 2: You will next complete your registration. If you have been pre-registered, the registration process takes less than five minutes. If not, it may take up to 20 minutes. The registrar will verify your information and collect any required insurance copayment.
Step 3: A nurse will review your medical history with you, measure your vital signs, and verify your medications.
Step 4: If indicated, an anesthesia nurse will review your health history, discuss anesthesia options and answer any questions you may have.
Step 5: A medical technician will draw your blood and perform an EKG (heart rhythm test), if required.
Step 6: If a chest x-ray is required, you will be directed to the radiology department. Failure to get your chest x-ray could result in a delay or cancellation of your surgery.
