    Presbyterian Hospital earns sustainability award

    June 15, 2023Press ReleaseFeatured

In recognition of its achievement and innovation in health care sustainability, Presbyterian Hospital received the Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading sustainable health care organization, becoming the only hospital in New Mexico to receive this recognition.

Healthcare’s impact on the environment is significant. According to a recent Health Affairs study, the health care sector is responsible for at least 8 percent of national greenhouse gas emissions in the US. The Greenhealth Partner for Change Award recognizes superior performance in environmental sustainability, covering a range of different sustainability programs and activities.

“At Presbyterian, we’re committed to focusing on more sustainable operations because we know it supports a healthier community and workforce,” said Dionne Cruz Miller, chief hospital executive, Presbyterian Hospital. “Our sustainability efforts have been underway for several years and we’re honored to be recognized for our team’s efforts.”

Presbyterian’s comprehensive and holistic sustainability program emphasizes viewing the work through the dual lenses of carbon reduction and equity. Presbyterian Hospital’s efforts range from waste minimization, such as decreasing single-use plastics, to lowering the carbon footprint of hospital facilities. Future projects for the organization include water conservation and building partnerships across the state to unify sustainability efforts.

“We’re proud of the acknowledgment that our sustainability efforts are making a difference in our community, but we also know there is more work ahead,” said Cruz Miller.
