Information for Clinical Assistants

Through the CDS Medical Staff Affairs office, Presbyterian Healthcare Services credentials Clinical Assistants to function at the Hospital in strict compliance with hospital policy and applicable sections of the Medical Staff Bylaws.

Community/independent providers may recruit assistants to assist them in clinical duties while providing patient care in the hospital. Clinical Assistants are only permitted to function in the hospital and under direct supervision of the community/independent provider by whom they are employed.

The following are considered Clinical Assistants:

  • Cardiovascular Tech
  • Certified Surgical Assistant
  • General and Pediatric Dental Assistant
  • Medical Assistant
  • Licensed Professional Counselor
  • Licensed Professional Art Therapist
  • Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor
  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor
  • Oral Maxillofacial Assistant
  • Pathology Assistant
  • Registered Nurse (excluding CRNAs)
  • Scribe
  • Second Scrub
  • Sonographer/Echo Tech
  • Surgical First Assists
  • Surgical Tech

Application

Prior to assisting their supervising physician, every Clinical Assistant must apply for permission to perform the scope of responsibilities relevant to their training, licensure, and/or work experience. The Office of Medical Staff Affairs manages the credentialing process of Clinical Assistants.

The process of applying is as follows:

  1. Application: Request and complete credentialing application
  2. Credentialing: Includes credentials verification (license, certifications, airways, etc.), verification of work history and/or hospital affiliation, fingerprint clearance letter, a criminal background check and submission of service request (as applicable)
  3. Screening: Includes health screening clearance (annual influenza, immunizations, TB, drug screen and respirator fit (as applicable))
  4. Orientation: Includes orientation (medical staff affairs, departmental, and role-specific) and granting access to facilities (ID badge)
  5. Training: Required training in the Presbyterian Learning Management System (LMS).
  6. Performance Evaluation: Annual competency assessments
