Office Consultations
The first step toward better sleep is an office consultation with one of our sleep specialists. At this appointment, we will explore your symptoms, sleep and medical history, and other factors that may be contributing to your sleep disturbances.
Sleep Study
If we recommend that you do a sleep study, or polysomnography, you may be wondering what is involved in this test and what to expect. A sleep study is a non-invasive, overnight exam that allows sleep specialists to monitor you while you sleep to see what’s happening in your brain and body.
While you sleep, an EEG monitors your sleep stages, to identify possible disruptions in the pattern of your sleep. It can also measure things such as eye movements, oxygen levels in your blood, heart and breathing rates, snoring and other body movements.
Before Your Sleep Study
Schedule an office consultation with your sleep specialist. You can save time by printing and filling out the Sleep Questionnaire for New Patients to bring with you.
Sleep Questionnaire for New PatientsIf the sleep specialist orders a sleep study, our staff will schedule one for you. Some patients may need to schedule a pre-sleep study visit to the center for a mask fitting. Pre-study tours of the center are also available.
If you are scheduled for an at-home study, please visit our At-Home Sleep Study Patient Resources page for instructions and help setting up your device.
What Do I Bring to the Sleep Study?
We want you to be comfortable, so bring what you normally wear while you sleep or bring comfortable, loose fitting clothes, as well as pillows, books, stuffed animals, and any other personal sleep items. We encourage children to bring their own stuffed animals or blankets.
Can I Have a Visitor During the Study?
Children must have one parent present during the sleep study. Adults may not have visitors unless specified by the provider.
Treatment During a Sleep Study
Before you go to bed in the exam room, a sleep specialist will place sensors, or electrodes, on you. Some patients may need a treatment intervention during their sleep study, so a sleep specialist may put a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask on you as you sleep. A CPAP is a soft mask that is fitted on the nose and mouth. It is then connected to an air compressor, and a continuous flow of air is delivered through the mask to keep the airway open during sleep.
Discharge and Follow-Up
For many patients, the use of a CPAP machine is a prescription that provides lifelong benefits of significantly better sleep and health. Please follow this prescription and any other specific medical orders given by your physician.
You can get the prescribed CPAP equipment from a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) company. Please consult your insurance company for DME companies that are covered by your insurance.
Once your treatment has started, you will have annual follow-up visits with your sleep specialist.
