Presbyterian Announces New Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Santa Fe Medical Center

SANTA FE, N.M. — Presbyterian Healthcare Services today announced plans to build a new cardiac catheterization (cath) lab at Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center, a major investment that will expand access to lifesaving heart care for patients across northern New Mexico.

Expected to open in spring 2027, the new program will bring 24/7 interventional cardiology services, including emergency treatment for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)—the most severe type of heart attack—to the community.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in New Mexico. For many patients in northern New Mexico, receiving specialized cardiac care often requires transfer to another facility, adding time when every minute counts.

"Access to timely, high-quality cardiac care shouldn't depend on where someone lives," said Callie Miller, Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center hospital chief executive. "This investment reflects Presbyterian's commitment to bringing advanced specialty care closer to home for the communities we serve. By expanding cardiac services in Santa Fe, we'll be able to care for more patients locally, improve outcomes and strengthen access to lifesaving care throughout northern New Mexico."

The new cath lab will provide around-the-clock care for patients experiencing STEMI heart attacks. Rapid access to cardiac catheterization and intervention restores blood flow to the heart, significantly improving survival rates while reducing long-term damage to the heart muscle.

"For patients experiencing a heart attack, every minute counts. By providing around-the-clock interventional cardiac care, we can deliver faster treatment, improve outcomes and help more patients receive the care they need closer to home,” said Dr. Leonardo Macias, a cardiologist with Presbyterian Heart Group.

The 2,100-square-foot facility will include two procedural rooms and supporting clinical space designed for coordinated cardiovascular care. Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation will contribute up to $3 million toward the project, thanks to the support of donors.
