In many New Mexico communities, limited access to healthcare is a significant barrier to good health.
To help improve access, Presbyterian Health Plan is bringing new technology to six clinics in rural northwest New Mexico.
The clinics, operated by Presbyterian Medical Services, will receive mobile medical exam kits powered and provided by TytoCare. The technology can perform heart, lung, throat and skin exams, among other forms of specialty care. They are used to expand services during a telehealth visit.
The TytoCare technology brings "physical exam data to a visit," according to Presbyterian Health Plan president Brandon Fryar, something a normal telehealth appointment wouldn't be able to perform.
To deploy the new technology at the clinics, PHP partnered with the New Mexico Department of Information Technology for technical assistance with the expanded broadband required for the devices.
"I've seen firsthand what limited access (to health care) does," Brandon Fryar, the president of PHP, told the Albuquerque Journal. "Those individuals in that community are driving to Albuquerque sometimes multiple times a week. We're really trying to think differently about that, because so much of that specialty care can be safely and effectively delivered through a telehealth option if you have sufficient broadband and the technology behind it."
