Presbyterian’s cancer rehabilitation program offers rehabilitation and support for patients in all phases of cancer treatment. Our team will help create an individualized exercise program to fit your physical abilities and limitations, to help you get the most out of life, feel healthier and improve your chances of long-term survival. The programs can help you decrease fatigue associated with your cancer treatments, increase or maintain your independence and ability to do activities of daily living, and increase tolerance of your cancer treatments.

The program has two main components:

  • Rehabilitation, which is generally covered by health insurance (you may have a copayment or coinsurance).

  • Exercise and educational programs, which are self-pay (not covered by health insurance).

In most cases, you will need a written referral and approval from your healthcare provider for rehabilitation and exercise services. Our outpatient oncology nurse can help you obtain the proper physician’s approval to participate.

Our rehabilitation therapy services include:

  • Physical therapy, which includes exercise, pain management and other activities (such as strength, flexibility and balance) that help you to regain or improve your level of physical function.

  • Occupational therapy, which includes upper extremity rehabilitation, pain management, and education to assist with daily living and work skills, basic motor functions or to compensate for a loss of function.

  • Speech and language pathology, which includes rehabilitation for communication, swallowing and cognitive training for problems related to the head and neck.

  • Lymphedema therapy with certified lymphedema therapists.

  • Individualized home programs

In addition, we offer a 10-week supervised exercise program designed for individuals in all phases of cancer treatment. The THRIVE Cancer Rehabilitation Exercise Program stands for:

  • Totality of Health

  • Healing and Recovery

  • Regaining Function

  • Independence and Strength

  • Victory over Cancer

  • Exercise and Education

With a combination of aerobic, resistance and balance exercises, you can improve muscular strength, bone density and endurance. Testing for fitness, stamina, strength, flexibility and body composition are performed at the beginning and end of the program. Blood pressure and heart rate are monitored before and after each exercise session. Participants work one-on-one with exercise specialists to design a program that fits their individual needs and features:

  • Cancer-certified exercise specialists

  • Individualized training, supervision and accountability

  • Group exercise

Note: A doctor’s approval is required for participation. Financial assistance available for those who qualify.
