Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)

Coronary artery bypass grafting (or CABG) surgery is performed to bypass a blocked coronary artery with a blood vessel graft to restore normal blood flow to the patient’s heart. The graft may come from the patient’s own artery or vein, usually from the chest, leg, or arm. The graft is placed to allow blood to flow to the heart. This helps relieve symptoms of coronary artery disease, including angina (or chest pain). It lowers the patient’s risk of a heart attack and allows the patient to resume a normal lifestyle and activities of daily living.
