Urogynecology

Urogynecology is a subspecialty of women’s care that focuses on issues with the pelvic floor, including the female reproductive organs and the tissues and muscles that support them. Urogynecologists diagnose and treat problems in the urinary tract, vagina and intestinal tract. Common urogynecologic conditions include prolapse (the pelvic organs falling out or falling down), urinary incontinence (leaking urine) and fecal incontinence (leaking stool). Urogynecologists will often work with other doctors and healthcare team members to provide a specialized diagnostic and testing plan for their patients.

Conditions Treated

A few common conditions treated include:

  • Pelvic organ prolapse

  • Urinary incontinence

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction

  • Overactive bladder

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)

  • Bladder pain or discomfort (dysuria, interstitial cystitis)

  • Fecal incontinence and constipation

  • Genitourinary fistulas (vesicovaginal, rectovaginal)

  • Neuromodulation, including tibial nerve stimulation

  • Pessary fittings and care

  • Pelvic exercise plan, including Kegel exercises and other physical therapies

  • Bladder training

  • Burch procedure

  • Colpocleisis

  • Cystoscopy and cystourethroscopy

  • Fistula repair

  • 3D ultrasound imaging

  • Urethral reconstruction

  • Urethral diverticulectomy / cystectomy
