Pediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiology

Our pediatric and adult congenital cardiology program has an interdisciplinary team of board certified providers, including a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, a pediatric interventional cardiologist, and cardiologists who focus on fetal cardiology, adult congenital cardiology, electrophysiology, congenital heart disease, and acquired heart diseases in both pediatric and adult patients.

This program has been available to the Albuquerque community for over 30 years. As part of Presbyterian Heart and Vascular Care as well as maintaining a strong relationship with The Children’s Center at Presbyterian, we have ready access to specialists in cardiology, obstetrics, neonatology, hematology, pharmacology, endocrinology, neurology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, and many other medical specialties.

Conditions We Treat

Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a term used to describe a group of problems present at birth that affect the structure of the heart and/or the large vessels near the heart. There are many types of CHD. Some types may be detected before birth and, in some cases, may be treated before birth. Other types are not found until the baby is born, during childhood or in adulthood. A few examples of the congenital heart conditions we treat include:

  • Atrial septal defect
  • Atrioventricular septal defect
  • Coarctation of the aorta
  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome
  • Pulmonary atresia
  • Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Total anomalous pulmonary venous return
  • Tricuspid atresia
  • d-Transposition of the Great Arteries
  • Truncus arteriosus
  • Ventricular septal defect

Electrophysiology

Electrophysiology is the study of the electrical system of the heart. We have specialists that manage and treat, often even curing problems of the electrical system. Conditions include:

  • Arrhythmia
  • Long QT Syndrome

Acquired Diseases in Pediatric Cardiology

These problems may develop during childhood and require care and monitoring by an experienced team of cardiologists.

  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Hyperlipidemia
  • Hypertension or High Blood Pressure

Common Concerns

Your child’s primary care provider might refer your child to a cardiologist because of certain concerns, such as:

  • Heart Murmur
  • Syncope or Fainting
  • Chest Pain
  • Obesity

Treatments Provided

Our team can provide a wide variety of treatments and services for congenital heart disease, including:

Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac catheterization is a test that uses a thin, flexible tubes, called a catheters, to treat conditions of the heart. The catheter is inserted into a blood vessel in the arm, groin or neck and threaded to the heart, enabling a cardiologist to conduct diagnostic testing and treatments.

Cardiac Surgery

Surgery is sometimes necessary to treat heart conditions. Our full service team, will be by you/your child’s side the entire way. Our surgical and interventional team provides a range of services, including:

  • Surgical and interventional ASD and VSD closures
  • Surgical repair of complete atrioventricular defects (CAVC), coarctation (narrowing of a short section of the aorta), and Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF)
  • Surgical and interventional valve replacements

Our Doctors

Consultations for pediatric and adult congenital cardiology and heart surgery are available at the Presbyterian Hospital Physician Office Building in downtown Albuquerque. Consultative pediatric cardiology appointments are also available in Las Cruces, Roswell, and Farmington.
