Protecting Your Health Information on a Shared or Public Computer
October 8, 2026

Your health information is personal. If you use a shared computer, public computer, or public Wi-Fi to manage healthcare needs, a few simple steps can help protect your privacy.
Use a Secure Connection when Possible
Whenever you can, use a private internet connection instead of public Wi-Fi for virtual visits, accessing your MyPRES account, or other healthcare tasks. Public networks, like those offered at coffee shops and libraries may make it easier for others to access information sent or received on your device.
Protect Your Login Information
Keep usernames and passwords private. Do not save passwords on shared or public computers, and avoid writing them where others can see them. If you think someone else may know your password, change it as soon as you can.
Sign Out When You are Finished
When you are done using a healthcare website or member portal, sign out completely and close the browser window. If you used a public or shared device, avoid downloading or saving documents that include personal health information.
Be Careful with Emails and Links
Only open links from trusted sources. If an email or text message asks for personal information, login details, or payment information and you are not sure it is legitimate, contact the organization directly using a phone number or website you know is correct.
Taking a few extra steps can help you use digital tools with more confidence while keeping your personal information safer.
